108 Subscribers And a Contest

Written on September 17, 2007 – 3:56 pm | by Alexandru |

49 days after I started writing for this blog and 39 days since I started doing a half ass job at promoting it, Shylock Blogging finally reached 100 subscribers. Well, 108 to be exact.

feed-numbers-shylock

To celebrate this first milestone I thought a contest would be appropriate. Now, there are no money involved, only banners and reviews, but the total value of these prizes I figure is around $120.

The prizes:

1st Place - prizes worth $60

  • 3 month 125×125 ad spot, beneath the Subscribe area in my sidebar - priced at $40 (on all articles and pages)
  • review of the blog - currently priced at $20 (my honest opinion on it, the good and the bad)

2nd Place - prizes worth $40

  • 1 month 468×60 banner at the bottom of all my articles (without pages) - priced at $20
  • review of the blog - priced at $20

3rd Place - prizes worth $20

  • review of the blog - priced at $20

Why these prices? Well, they honestly don’t seem high to me. Though the blog is new and doesn’t officialy have a PR yet, some of the blogs that linked to one or another of its articles include Gawker, Valleywag, NYMag.com, Cash Quests, NetBusinessBlog, Blogging Tips, Dosh Dosh, Daily Blog Tips, Blog.Wired.com, Blogging Fingers, JohnTP, 45n5, Mashable, Untwisted Vortex, and there are more. Thank you all for the mentions.

Current Technorati Rank is 47,507, and an Alexa rank of 167,261. The Alexa average rank for the last 7 days is 49,393.

Rules:

  • no porn, gambling, pills or other spammy looking sites. Real blogs only please. I reserve the right to disqualify any blog that doesn’t have a minimum of respectability attached.
  • one entry per user please. Let’s keep this fair.
  • only mentions in articles written in the next 2 weeks are considered. Previous mentions of my blog don’t qualify.
  • blogs written in english only. The prizes would be useless if the ads would send to the winner blogs traffic that doesn’t understand what they’re saying.

What you need to do:

  • Link to my homepage and/or one of my articles that you think your readers might enjoy. It can be an entire article dedicated to this or you can simply mention it in one of your speed linking posts. 2-3 lines about it should be enough. I’d appreciate it however if you would place the mention somewhere at the beginning of that article if its a speed linking one and there are others mentioned in the same post.
  • Contact me via this page and let me know the URL of the article where you linked to me. Don’t forget this step! I will only consider entries to the contest if you contact me and tell me about them.

The contest ends 2 weeks from now, on October 1st. The last day for submissions is September 30. The winners of the contest will be chosen randomly.

If anyone else wants to bring some extra prizes to the table, I will make sure you get links with your keywords of choice on all the posts I’ll write about this contest. I reserve the right to refuse prizes, depending on what they are :). They still need to provide some value to those taking part in the contest. Contact me via the same contact form if you want to be a sponsor of the contest.

PS: and some link love to the Contests Blog, where this contest will also be announced.

Alex, congrats! you are a good example ;)

Regarding the contest, it is valid only for English blogs? Is there any other language accepted?

  6. By Alexandru on Sep 17, 2007 | Reply

Johnny, the nature of the prizes kind’off makes it necessary to be in english. I mean, the prizes are useless to you if the people that come from this blog can’t understand what your blog is about.
Besides, I don’t feel comfortable giving advertising to sites that I don’t know what they’re about.

So yeah, sorry, blogs written in english only.

Yeap, you’re right. I’m just so sorry that your contest came a little bit earlier for me, as I want to launch a blog in english next month (beside the photo blog).

Maybe you’ll do another contest when you’ll reach 200 subscribers :)

Johnny, there will be another contest 1 month from now probably, to promote a browser game that I’m working on :).

  9. By Johnny on Sep 17, 2007 | Reply

    good news, then :)
I hope I’ll be ready by then :)

Good :). That contest will be bigger, it will pe open to blogs in any language and the rewards will be links from this blog, but they will require a review or a mention of another site (the game).

    Hi,
I see you are running a contest. You might want to visit the blog on my link. You can submit your contest for free, in your own words by visiting the link. I am actually advertising with Adwords so you should get decent traffic from this initiative, plus a link to your blog!
    thanks,
    C Fernandes

Anyway good luck to all participants;)
